About 230,000 years old, these teeth from Pontnewydd are the sole physical remains of the first known inhabitants of Wales, early Neanderthals, a species that lived about 150,000 years before modern man. This image shows an upper jaw fragment of a child aged about 11 years with a worn milk tooth and a permanent molar still in place in the jaw.
